2000 Blog

Last night I met up with Roger and Jansen and went to club 77 in the city. Today I'll be deciding what to do for New Years Eve. We are thinking about driving up to Byron Bay at the moment!

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year!

It's been a busy Christmas with Christmas day spent at the Allinson's, then Boxing day at home with the family. I had a great time and enjoyed seeing everyone after being away (in Perth) for the last 6 months.

The last couple days I've been down to David's with Ken, Spew, and Greg. We've been swimming at the beach and mucking around. We still need to organise something for New Years eve though. Spew will be going to Mobile Home at Bondi Beach, but tickets cost $150 which is a bit much!

I tried out the iiNet Sydney POP yesterday but it doesn't seem to work for people in the "bad boy pipe" (over 750Mb volume limit). I guess I'm the first person in the pipe to try it smiley.

Yesterday was a total disaster flying Qantas! It started out with all flights being delayed by one hour. After boarding the plane it was further delayed because of some small problem. 20-30mins later and it finally takes off for Melbourne. Initially I was to have just under an hour between touching down in Melbourne and the connecting flight to Sydney.

After landing at Melbourne there were no spaces left at the terminal to park. It was over 30mins before a space opened up so I knew I must have missed the connecting flight to Sydney. I then queued at the customer service desk but before being served the staff said to move to Gate 7 for further information (Perth - Melb - Syd people). When arriving at Gate 7 there was an announcement that the original connecting flight is waiting for departure and to rush to Gate 23. Well Gate 23 was on the other side of the airport! I'm first to get there with 2 other people and the gate attendant says "the plane is completely full"!!! She was quite helpful and put us on the next flight out at 8:30pm. The connecting flight is delayed from taking off for about 20mins because the flight crew were late to Melbourne airport (from previous flight).

I was upgraded to business class for the flight from Melbourne to Sydney but that didn't make up for all the problems and waits, or what I was in for at Sydney. In short, I was in Sydney but my luggage wasn't. Quite a few passengers following the same route from Perth also had missing luggage and everyone had to fill out paper claims. Originally I was meant to leave Perth at 10:15am and touch down in Sydney at 6:50pm. Instead I arrived at Sydney around 10:15pm (close to 3.5 hours later).

I can happily say my luggage was delivered to our house today! Yes, that was amazing; the only thing Qantas can be commended on (that it was sent out so quickly).

Tonight I'm meeting with the boys for drinks at the Arms. Should be good seeing everyone!

Well it's 1am in the morning and I'm flying out at 10:15am today! I will finish off a few computer related things like backups before going to sleep. Packing is just about done and I've finished wrapping Christmas presents.

Ruwani and I have already exchanged Christmas presents early cause I didn't want to cart stuff to Sydney and back. She gave me some really cool stuff including the next Dune book: Prelude to Dune, House Harkonnen. I'll read the book on the plane and in Sydney.

Over the last couple days I've been download a lot of demos. Most of these are from www.scene.org and a few other demo places. It's been a long time since watching any demos and I was pleasantly surprised with the way the scene has progressed over the years. Some of the new demos are simply stunning.

Tomorrow I begin packing and preparing for my Sydney visit. Gotta wrap some Christmas presents too!

I went for a ride today and at about the 2/3 mark I got a cramp in my right calf. So I eased off a little and modified the way I was riding to help stretch the lower leg. This kept the cramp at bay, but still on the verge. Anyway, shortly after I got a cramp in my left calf too! It was then I decided I'd better stop and do some stretches smiley

Congratulations David & Alinta

Alinta and David We just got back from the wedding reception a short while ago. I must say it was excellent and I wish the best to both David and Alinta.

There was a bit of a drama at the reception when electricity was lost to the house (overload). It was at this time David decided to have the first dance; by candle light using his own voice for music! Ruwani and I met up with some people from Alinta's engagement party so we had quite a good time.

I've started doing some exercise again! Although I had a break yesterday, the previous 3 days I had gone on 40min bike rides. I'll be going on another later today when the sun sets.

Uni results are out and I have updated the University Results page. I'm both pleased and annoyed at the marks. They are all good marks, but a couple of them I thought I would have done better. It doesn't really matter though, I just want to finish Uni and get back into working!

I'll be going to the wedding of one of Ruwani's friends on Sunday. That should be good. I hope it's not too hot though cause for the last couple days we've had 30+ temperatures...

Just about one week to go before I fly to Sydney!

The other day I managed to get MRTG working to map network usage. So my MRTG work is now complete.

Last night I went to Carols by Candlelight at Burswood (next to the casino) with Ruwani. It was pretty good but I took way to much food smiley. They even had all these kids dressed up and featured real animals like camels, goats and sheep. As usual it was pretty windy (esp. next to the River) so our candles kept getting blown out!

I called Qantas to get my flight details again cause I lost them! Anyway I'm flying out on December 23rd to Sydney (via Melbourne), and flying back on January 25th. My ticket has now been purchased for linux.conf.au and I'm looking forward to it!

Looks like my University results will be available online on Friday 15th. Getting a little nervous...

I was working on getting MRTG going yesterday. After the initial learning curve it appears quite simple and relatively easy to write new scripts to graph almost anything (such as CPU usage, disk usage, mem usage etc...). Today I'll work on getting it to graph network usage.

slashdot recently featured a link to a news story about hightech homes of the rich and famous. Well, all I can say is that they are amazing but seem a waste of money and resources. After reading the article I though about our place here:

The Head End doubles as my main workstation and provides disk sharing, task management, printing services, scanning services, and shared Internet access to all computers on the network. The computer is connected to the stereo system for music playback (mp3s and CDs). Cables are carefully hidden by running them along the floor. A sensor light is positioned outside to light up the back entrance (this is high tech).

Last night I fell out of bed! That's like a half metre drop so it hurt a little. I think it must have been because I was sleeping near the edge and turned the wrong way smiley. Ruwani said it made a loud noise so I think I hit a chest of draws on the way down (with my head).

I'm going into the City today to pay for my linux.conf.au ticket and dinner. I may do some Christmas shopping after that I thinks...

Last night I saw Unbreakable with Ruwani, Mrs Lim, and Ruwani's cousin Ramesh visiting from Victoria. I thought it was quite good and worth watching, however nothing really warranted seeing it on the big screen (video would have been fine). Hehe, slashdot just put up a review of Unbreakable that's better than what I could do.

Yesterday I had to go into uni yet again to sort out my enrolment for next year. It looks like it should be a good year, a full first semester and then only 3 units in the second semester. The second semester does depend on whether I do any elective units, if I don't then I can probably start working, if I do then I'll probably have to be at Uni full-time. I'll update the Uni area with the new details soon.

On Saturday night I went out with Ryan and Stepehen from Uni. We had a bit of pizza before leaving for the Mount Henry, and it was our plan to stay there. Unfortunately the Mount Henry was pretty deserted and apart from the 15 chicks that walked in (a hens night) and left shortly after, there was nothing much happening. We decided to leave and go to Northbridge at around 9:30ish when Ruwani arrived back home (so we could have a lift). She didn't want to stay with us so it was just us three. It was quite an interesting night for me cause I'd never been to Northbridge before. I had no idea it'd be so busy, incredible. The only bad thing that happened was getting chucked out of a pub because Stephen decided to break an ashtray (when a bouncer was walking past!) smiley.

This morning I went to uni (yes I know uni is finished, I'm sad) to watch the Honour students make their presentations. Well, seeing their work summarised into a 20ish minute presentation was very impressive. I was happy to have attended!

Yay! my exams are now over. Yesterday the cg252 exam was a little tough. I was plodding along when I realised I was going to seriously run out of time (jeez I'm slow at handwriting). So although I should pass, I probably won't get that great a mark.

Jimbo is over from NSW for a wedding. So today we're heading down to Fremantle to catch up and look around. It just turns out that today the Fremantle Festival (Food and Fun Fair) is on, what luck smiley.

[later] I should have said "a Food and Fun Fair", cause it was only very small, and was specifically Indian/ Sri Lanka / Malaysian etc... We ended up getting fish and chips!

Woohoo, I've now finished 2 out of 4 final exams for this semester. This morning I had fcs152 and thought I did quite OK. Overall I'm not worried about that subject. Next up was spd251. Before going into the exam I knew I was headed for a lot of writing. The past papers were writing intensive and Andrew (lecturer) said "if you're not writing non-stop the whole time then you have probably missed something, or not giving detailed enough answers"! The problem is I suck at writing; I'm slow and my hand gets really sore. I think this is a product of using a keyboard for so long! Well I couldn't finish the exam because I ran out of time, but I'm pretty sure of a pass.

I now have se252 on Monday then cg252 on Tuesday. Probably going to need some study I think :-(.

The last couple days I've been working away in my office on oDNS, an open source DNS Administration System based on a database back-end and a web interface. I have been making additions to support aliased domains. Sometimes customers have multiple domains that should contain the same information, why enter them in multiple times; just do it once and add aliases. I also wrote a parser to read in existing zone files and create a dump file for immediate import into the database.

I must say I was a little shocked with the code, or should I say "spaghetti code". The only credit I give is that it actually works smiley.

The couple days before my oDNS hacking I was organising information for my tax accountant. Things look very promising so far!

Tonight I will attend another PLUG meeting. The talk will be on the GNU General Public License, so it sounds interesting. I have been meaning to read the license and understand it 100% for a while now, this should give me a good head start.

Well, I was able to complete my pdm351 project proposal and group presentation work on time BUT it was a little tough. I completed the proposal on Sunday 4/5 hours after I had expected to finish. So I was quite late at starting work on the group presentation. Luckily for me we had done most of the research and all of the layout order etc... It was a matter of writing the content and creating the slides. However, it was so late at night and I was only 50% awake I didn't get to sleep until after 5:20am, then work up less than 2 hours later smiley. In the end it turned out our group presentation was too long and I had to rush through the slides!

I'm happy all that stuff is over and have a bit of a break until my first exam on the 16th. Actually I think I have 2 exams on the 16th... Anyway, I'm spending the time catching up with some work and relaxing a little. I plan to start some study today. Yes, it's a little uncustomary for me to start earlier than the day before, but I want to do well...

Ruwani and I went shopping the other day and I forgot I'd stuck a post-it note on her back! It said "Happy 21st Ruwani", I should have had wrote "Kick Me" or something smiley.

Working hard over this weekend on my project proposal and group presentation for pdm351, due in on Monday.

Also, the other day I decided to change the site logo (look above). It was a 5 minute job so no complaints. I hope to change it regularly!

My computer crashed yesterday which is a strange occurrence when using Linux (don't worry it wasn't anything to do with Linux in the end). It actually started behaving quite strangely before the crash too... Anyway, I discovered the problem was heat! Inside our place it doesn't get too hot and I didn't realise it was such a warm day yesterday. The sun was shining in via gaps in my blinds onto the computer case so it was getting real hot. I turned off the computer and let it cool down. Meanwhile I decided to make some make-shift insulation with cardboard to protect from the direct sun. So far it's been pretty good, considering there have been no problems and it's hotter today!

Yesterday we had an electrician install a Clipsal Safety Switch. This will take away some of the nerves I now feel when dealing with electricity (see electrocution diary entry). Sometimes I get really reluctant to mess about with my computer (like installing the CD-R/RW drive I bought a short while ago).

Although it's not Ruwani's birthday until the 24th of October, last night we celebrated with family friends at dinner. We had great food, there were no speeches, and Ruwani didn't do anything embarrassing.

Golden Key

my Golden Key certificate The Golden Key National Honour Society (Curtin Chapter) induction ceremony was held tonight. Quite a good evening was had and I met a few interesting people. Ruwani and Mrs Lim attended, but guests were seated separate to the inductees so I didn't get to see them until it was over. Although it was meant to be a formal evening, a few people were letting lose during the certificate presentation. On the less extreme side were people clapping (meant to wait until all had been presented), then there were others shouting stuff like "Yeah!". The best was when an elderly woman went up to receive her certificate and someone (possible the son) yelled out "Way to go mum!"

I think I might go along to the AGM (Annual General Meeting) in November to get more acquainted with the people involved and for some free pizza!

Well, our se252 group assignment is finally finished and I handed it in a couple hours ago. That leaves cg252 and spd251 to be handed in over the next couple days (already complete). From now to the end of the semester my main concerns are the fcs152 assignment, pdm351 group presentation, and pdm351 project proposal.

My new CD burner and mouse arrived today. I needed a new mouse cause the $5 one I'm using at the moment is very frustrating. It keeps getting "stuck" even though I've cleaned it thoroughly and used racing lubricant on the moving bits... The new mouse is optical smiley! The burner should prove useful too. I have so much data (work and uni) that I'd like to backup and store off site just in case something tragic happens to my computers at the same time.

Hello Lucy!

Good (great even) and bad news today. First the good news:

my niece lucy I was over at Ngeow's house when Marco called. Chantal finally delivered the baby! Congratulations both Chantal and Marco for my new little niece "Lucy". I'm looking forward to my visit to Sydney coming up. I have added a picture with Lucy picking her nose smiley.

The bad news is that I burnt my finger. It's the same finger that was badly burnt when I was electrocuted (doh!). It'll be OK cause it's a very minor burn this time. It tingles when I type.

My flight to Sydney has been booked already. I'm scheduled to fly out on the 23rd of December, and return to Perth on the 25th of January. I plan on spending Christmas with the family, working, attending linux.conf.au and catching up with friends and Ian.

Some weird things happened to Ruwani yesterday when out on a walk. When nearing a house, she noticed the letter box was surrounded by bees. As she started to walk past, a couple birds flew toward her swooping to attack. One of the birds actually hit her in the back of the head! Apparently they were only small birds (I was worried it was magpies).

To make things even stranger, I woke up last night about 4:00am after experiencing a nightmare. I quickly made the following notes:

A "leck" (spelling?)

It leaves eggs in the skin, they hatch and roam around the body and also leave eggs in the skin. Little things, easy to kill but in those numbers it's impossible.

Let's just say I had some of those in my skin.

Apparently Chantal is meant to be giving birth any day now. I hope things go smoothly for her and I'm sad I won't be able to see the little baby until the end of the year. There are rumours they will name the baby after me, but these can't be confirmed.

The fcs152 mid-semester test results came back and I seem to have done surprisingly good. Our tutor (also the marker) said that the highest mark was 45/50 and it wasn't anyone in our class. He also said the average was disappointingly low, so I thought I must have gone crappy. Later on we got the test back and I was quite happy with a 47/50 smiley.

Uni Stuff

fatsoYesterday I worked on the second cg252 assignment and finished some time later that night. There is still some tidying up todo but the code is 100% there unless I feel like adding additional functionality. The assignment was to create a picture puzzle game with sliding pieces. The picture is broken down into 16 squares with one square missing, you need to slide around the squares until the picture is in the original form. I'll put it online later (after it's been handed in). Ryan was kind enough to send me the perfect picture for the job (pictured to the right).

Today our se252 group is holding a meeting at 3:00pm. Yeah, it's Sunday but we've got to get this done...

Happy 21st JP!!!

I'm off to the PLUG Installfest this morning. Should be a good day!

[later] Well it seems to have been quite a success. Certainly a lot more people than expected turned up, we're quite lucky the advertising wasn't that complete (like Uni notice boards etc...). Leon Brooks took a few pictures during the day: http://plug.linux.org.au/~leonb/plug_pix_20000924/. I am featured in "dsc00032.jpg" off to the right hand side. I am talking to Terry Alexander, who just happened to be the guy that installed our second telephone line here!

I've got next week off uni, but I'll be working and doing assignments. I'm thinking of going to the beach too because the weather is getting much better lately.

Well, I have completed and handed in my fcs152 assignment and I'm spending this evening studying for the se252 mid-semester tomorrow morning.

It looks like I must be doing well (enough) at Uni, as they sent through an invitation to join their Chapter of the Golden Key Honour Society. I have decided to join and there will be an induction ceremony in October some time.

I'm pretty much better again! I went to uni this week despite not being 100%, especially because 2 assignments were due, and I needed to get any information about the 2 mid-semester tests that I have on next week.

The Olympic opening ceremony was on (actually, it's still going on) but I only caught a few snippets. Looked good, we'll see what the press has to say about it in the news papers tomorrow smiley.

I've been sick with this thing for the whole week! I haven't been to Uni either so I'm probably behind on a few subjects too. I think it's finally starting to die off and should be fine again for Uni on Tuesday.

In the meantime, I've been able to complete my spd251 and cg252 assignments, next up is my fcs152 assignment and group assignments for pdm351 as well as se252. Overall, pretty happy with this semester so far.

Otherwise, a bit slow with the updates. I have been taking things easy this week.

A big happy birthday and fathers day for my dad yesterday.

Last night I started to get a sore throat, this morning it was killing! Looks like I've got a cold/flu coming on... Not happy at all.

I haven't been doing too much since the last entry, a bit of work here, a bit of Uni homework there. Oh yeah, I read the latest Dune book called "Prelude to Dune - House Areides" by Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson. Brian Herbert is the son of Frank Herbert, the original author of the Dune series. The also have a web site now: www.dunenovels.com.

Last night I went to see "Hollow Man". WARNING: the following may spoil the movie if you intend to see it. From the TV ads you can tell the special effects should be great (and they were) however, overall it really sucked hard. It started out OK but degraded into a poor horror movie, then kept degrading (by adding many explosions). Just think about this for a moment, they are able to become invisible, so what do you do from there to keep the story going. Oh, I know! Why doesn't the invisible guy go insane (insane = violence in Hollywood) and become almost super human, then everyone else should die except for the couple in love. Follow that link above and you'll see some movie information which includes:

"Marlowe says of the story, "it is an exciting morality play about a charismatic leader held in check by society's rule. With no cliches, we see what transpires as ..."

... and they said no cliches.

This semester in Software Engineering 252 we'll be using a CASE tool from Rational software. I know universities are often approached by tool vendors, language vendors etc to create teams of Computer Science students with specific experience in their products. Well, just by chance I was reading The Australian IT on Tuesday and there was an article explaining the situation: Seed grows student skills (read the local copy).

For the last couple days I've been doing java and my fOd4 page smiley. I'm learning a great deal about java as I go along and, most likely, GUI programming concepts at the same time. It looks like I will be doing a graphics related project next semester so I'm keen to increase my knowledge quickly.

On Monday I bought a bike lock. Now I can ride to Uni (yeah, no more 15 minute walk to the bus stop). Unfortunately it's been raining solid this week. We'll see what happens next week. I'd better get myself a rain coat I thinks...

Ahhh! I recently got my hands on Star Office 5.2 but it actually crashes (also reboots) my linux box! Can you believe that - well I can't. I really wanted to read a Star Office formatted presentation that rasterman gave recently. As a last resort I setup NFS for Star Office and ran it off my other system which is a bit lacking on RAM. Well, over a 10Mb Ethernet it took ages to load Star Office (considering the install directory uses up 220Mb).

When I was back in Sydney I found some old flyers of raves so today I was working on my fOd4 page - coming soon smiley.

I upgraded Gimp to version 1.1.24 which meant my xsane (scanner plugin) broke, ie: it needed a recompile. So, at the same time I thought I'd upgrade both sane and xsane (why not). Sane was working fine after compiling and installing the latest version, but xsane wasn't able to find any devices. After a long time I tracked down the problem (broken sym links in the /usr/local/lib/sane/). Not happy.

On a much better note, I finished the required java program for my CG252 Assignment. I'm happy because it's not due until the 9th of September! However, I still have to complete the research/reading component.

It's been a long week following our move:

  • We've had to unpack and organise the new place. There is still some unpacking happening but most of what is left are my folders and books. I've got to buy some shelving!
  • On Tuesday I gave a talk on Apache at PLUG. My notes are online in the article section: Apache Talk (PLUG).
  • My enrollment was all screwed at Uni, so I've been trying to get it fixed and I think (since Friday) that it's all back to normal. The student database ("Student 1", or "Student Dumb" as people know it) had me enrolled in 2 undergraduate courses, the B.E. Software Eng. and the B.Sc. Comp Sci.
  • Telstra installed a second phone line but muffed it up. The service was active in the MDF but the pair connecting us from the MDF was soldered to the wrong place. It's fixed now.
  • This new place is closer to Uni than our last place, but it's not close to public transport. I have to walk 15 mins to get to a bus stop while the bus takes only 5 mins to get to Uni! To make it worse, the bus only comes once and hour at stupid times and finishes before 6:00pm (not good for lectures starting at 7:30pm). I'm going to buy a bike chain and ride to Uni from now on.

I'm going to setup my other modem on the first phone line so that we can send and receive faxes. The only problem at the moment is that I don't know where the cables are (damn moving ;)).

Roger has kindly created an introduction tune for use on my web site. I intend to do some voice-overs and make it available soon. Unfortunately the download has to wait as I grab Java JDK 1.2.2 (20+Mb) and Java SDK 1.2.2 Documentation (10Mb) for Computer Graphics 252.

It's now the end of a very long day of moving. To make things even harder than they need be, it was pouring the whole day. I was drenched! We started the move early and didn't finish until mid afternoon. Since then we've been unpacking and setting stuff up. Tomorrow is another big day as we have to clean up the old apartment. There is still a lot of unpacking and sorting out to do, but at least my computer and desk is done smiley.

PGP (using GnuPG) is now setup on my systems at home. Feel free to grab my public key and send me encrypted email! Really, everyone and every company should be sending signed email at a minimum if it contains important information (such as an invoice).

I stumbled across a website last night called www.doodie.com. It appears to be a regular cartoon about doodie (which is another word for poo) and it's just hilarious! I've added one of the cartoons as a new ad for the site smiley.

There was a recent article on osopinion.com that sparked a response from me. The topic of the article was "Ease of use and "UI": A lesson in idiocy?". I made a posting in the user forum but a local copy is available.

Yesterday (last night) I was making some major updates (back-end side of things) to the Firm web site. We're now running off a DB which makes quite a few things much more simple!

I spent the whole morning cleaning. Since we're moving out next week we've gotta leave this place nice and clean. I think I'm going to have to pickup about 4 huge bags worth of leaves later this afternoon!

The ATO finally assigned Mind Socket an ABN (on Fri 28th April), talk about slow as crap. Just in time for my next invoice run smiley.

Remember that PLUG talk? Well the CG252 lecture is up in the air at the moment so I might be able to put it on!

I haven't mentioned anything previously in my diary, but Ruwani and I will be moving from South Perth in about a week. The new place is even closer to Uni (yeah!) so I'll be able to save a little extra time to-and-from Uni. Better yet, I can probably ride my bike to Uni in no time at all! We're looking at getting a second telephone line for the new place and Telstra tell us it'll cost $200 (argh!).

I have been updating the University section and will continue to update as I go through this first week of Uni. Looks like I'm going to enjoy every subject this semester!

postcard from ianWhen Ian was over in England earlier this year he sent me this postcard (pictured). I'll leave it up to you to guess what this is smiley. I've been meaning to scan this in for quite a while but didn't get around to it...

On Tuesday, 8th of August, I was meant to be doing a talk at PLUG but it seems I will have to cancel! My Computer Graphics 252 unit lecture changed to the awful time of Tuesday nights at 7:30pm to 9:30pm.

Wow it has been 2 weeks already and I'm back in Perth again. Unfortunately I wasn't updating my diary over that time so I'll summarise in point form:

  • Many lunches during the first week including clients, ex-Zeta, and family/friends.
  • Many dinners during the second week including Nick/Masami (also played Cashflow 101), Ian and his work buddies, David/Antonia, all my friends (Malaya on George), and Ian plus family on the last night.
  • Spew was feeling "sick" (like a girl) the whole 2 weeks smiley.
  • Basically completed the ClientDB system. There are a few areas that need a little polishing though.
  • Read "Cash Flow Quandrant" which is the sequel to "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" (see previous diary entry). In summary this was more of the same.
  • Read "Amazon.com - Get Big Fast" by Robert Spector. It was a pity I couldn't quite finish off the entire book before leaving Sydney but I did read all the "takeaways" sections that nicely summarised the material covered in each chapter.
  • Bought "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey but didn't get a chance to read much. Note that I have previously read most of this book but wanted a copy to keep as a guide.
  • Got my University results for Semester 1, 2000 (on the web). I was quite happy with my marks and even passed Linear Systems 201!
  • My return flight to Perth really sucked! Take off was delayed 40 minutes because of some missing people and baggage, flight time was longer than usual because of strong head winds (4.5hrs compared to 3.2hrs Perth->Syd), and at the Perth terminal there was a problem with getting the baggage off the plane (another delay)!!!

Uni starts back up today but I don't have any lectures scheduled on Mondays. I still have to go into Uni though, I have some lecture conflicts to sort out and am debating about switching to Computer Science (from BE Software Engineering).

[Later] Uni has been sorted out! I'm now a Computer Science student with just over a year left of studies. With this news, and my Uni results from before, I'm going to get started with updating the Uni section of the web site!

I'm off to Sydney tomorrow! I'll be back in Perth on Sunday the 23rd, just before Uni starts back up. I'm itching for those Uni results which will become available (from the web) on the 14th...

The last couple days I've been pretty quiet while working away at my ClientDB system - a client/administration system for Mind Socket. I had started a fair while back but development stalled because of my uni/work load. With the end of the Financial year just past I wanted to get a limited functionality set complete to help me sort out tax. I'm pretty happy with the results so far and I'm going to continue work on it while in Sydney if I get a chance.

I've been meaning to ride since Friday but it rained all weekend and again today! I hope the weather is OK tomorrow...

Just finished! Ok, I created a little perl script to help with IP networking. Often, in the heat of the moment, you may be given some IP address and the mask (or total num of IPs) - how do you work out the network, broadcast etc? Sounds pretty simple and it is but often I don't have a tool at my fingertips to work it out. I'll probably add something in the Linux section one day. For the moment you can grab network.pl from here. Oh yeah, don't tell me it's been done before because I'm sure it has.

Yesterday I got off my butt and decided I'd better make use of my bike (again). I was riding everyday when I first bought the thing but it started raining on/off for more than a week and I haven't got back into the spirit until now... It's a nice bike - I gotta ride more often!

Over the last couple days I have been reading "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki with Sharon Lechter CPA (see www.richdad.com.au). It's an interesting read - I'm keen to learn more.

Well, it's all over now. I finished off the last 2 exams which proved to be quite difficult. I think my LS201 exam was very dodgey and I'll be lucky to pass. However DAA251 should have gone quite well despite getting home at 10:15pm after the LS201 exam and the DAA251 exam starting at 8:00am the next morning!

Ruwani rang up Qantas and it looks like I now I'll be leaving for Sydney an extra day early. I'm going to keep trying to get a couple more days...

The chair I purchased (along with my desk) from Ikea broke about a month ago. I've been pretty busy especially with Uni so didn't get around to replacing it until the weekend just past. Well, I returned the chair back to Ikea and got a credit - I thought I'd go back into the store and get a better one. The problem was the only chairs they had were the same as I had just returned (which suck) and weren't going to have any other models until September when the new catalogue comes out! So Ruwani and I left and went down the road to Office Works. I now have this executive leather chair called "The Boston" - it's really great smiley

Also added Linux Games to the site ads. Quite useful info source for all linux gaming (not that I play games).

My CC252 exam was quite straight forward (ie: no problems). At the end of the exam we were allowed to pick up our assignments and I was quite happy with the results. I'm confident my overall CC252 score should be in the "good" region smiley.

The Principles of Statistics 101 exam starts in less than an hour! I'm not too worried about this one though - it should be pretty simple. I am worried about the LS201 exam in a couple days :(

I now have a flight to Sydney booked but it's not as early as I would have liked (using Frequent Flyer points). That means my stay has been cut short a little bit (11 days). I'm going to try and get an earlier flight if possible...

Hey! I'm meant to be studying today for my Computer Communications 252 exam tomorrow. Instead I have put together another article about qmail. I'm none too pleased with CC252 because of some incorrect points in the notes (thanks to the PLUG members that pointed this out). You'd think that teaching accurate information was a priority (I know it's not always the most current info - but at least accurate!).

I finally went for a hair cut today!. The last hair cut I received was back in Sydney so that has to be at least 5 months ago smiley.

I attended another PLUG meeting tonight which was quite interesting. Leon was talking about security and made me more aware of the extent to which linux boxes can be secured.

I've been quite busy doing Mind Socket client work over the last week. I wanted to handle a large amount of pending work before my exams start on Thursday 15th. I should be able to get quite a bit completed after the exams too! However, for the moment I think I'd better start studying ;-(

I came across this site called Something Awful which does reviews, amongst other things, on movies and computer games. They recently reviewed a game demo called Thundra and it was just so funny my sides hurt!

Ruwani and I visited the Burswood Food & Wine Festival yesterday. It was quite good with lots of different foods and great wine (not that I'd be able to tell). At entry we paid a little extra to get a few wine tasting vouchers and a wine glass (for the tasting!). We thought it a good idea to get the glasses because we often break our glasses at home. That was a good choice because that night I broke mine - damnit! smiley

Quiz Night

blue monkey

On Wednesday night I decided to go along to the COMA Quiz night at the tavern with a couple friends. Unfortunately our table was particularly poor at answering the questions and we trailed behind everyone else the entire night. Coming last did have it's perks though - in the end we won a couple Disney books and a Barrel of Monkeys! The downside to the night was that I drank way too much and paid for it when I got home :(

Uni classes have now finished - yeah! Now I've got 2 weeks off before my exams start. Hopefully I can complete quite a bit of client work over this time.

While browsing slashdot I found this great review of the new Mission Impossible 2 movie (I haven't seen it yet). Read this local copy of the review smiley.

I visited the dentist for a checkup today and passed! It wasn't a high distinction or anything, more like a credit - I've got to floss a bit more often.

I bought Quake3 Arena quite a while back and haven't really played the thing. At the time my processor (the Pentium 250 MMX) just didn't give me a very good frame rate (too annoying to play). Anyways when I got a lot more RAM a while back I thought I'd give it another go (more RAM has got to help), but from that point on Windows would crash when trying to run the game. I've downloaded different Matrox drivers, different AOpen (VIA) motherboard drivers etc... and I just can't get it to work. Since I bought the new CPU I've been wanting to try it out again, and since it crashes in windows I thought I'd get things running under Linux. All I can say is that it works pretty well! With the graphics mode set to "fastest" I get just over 38 fps and in "normal" mode at 800x600 I can get over 30 fps.

Pitch Black

We're going to see Pitch Black now (more when I get back).

[Later] It sucked.

Channel
Ten News (avi) Somewhere, somehow I ended up with video capture from Channel 10 news back last year. It's all about Linux and features Michael Malone (from iiNet). I couldn't think where else this should go so I'm adding it to my diary! Be aware the file is 4.67Mb in size.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the troubles I was having over the weekend! The cheap arse fan that I bought along with my AMD K6-2 550Mhz processor died. In fact I had to disconnect it from the power supply altogether cause it was making some awful noises. Of course, without even a cheap fan the processor was quickly getting hot. The situation was this: boot into Windows and the computer would die within a few minutes (cpu too hot), boot into Linux and everything was fine. The problem is that Windows, when idle, keeps the CPU busy so that it doesn't drop into lower power modes, this results in a bloody hot CPU! My problem was that I had to type up my assignment using Word (stupid University). In the end I was just able to get things done (luck was with me!)

Anyways, I ordered a Global Win heatsink/fan combo along with an 8cm case fan and received it the other day. I installed everything but still had problems trying to get the system running at 550Mhz. It certainly isn't the heat anymore (it doesn't burn me if I touch it now smiley). I don't know what's going on but I'll live with 500Mhz for the moment.

With all this computer fooling around I was reading my motherboard motherboard manual and realised I could do hardware monitoring of things like the CPU temperature, voltage, fan speed, and case fan speed. So I went-a-searching and found all the necessary things for Linux. Now I realise the difference Linux and Windows have on the processor (regarding heat). Under Linux when sitting completely idle the temperature will drop to about 26 degrees. If I emulate a Windows environment (have a process using 100% cpu time) the temperature will climb up to 51 degrees. It seems that while I'm actually using Linux the temperature varies but typically stays just above 30 degrees.

Wormy

Ruwani's sister Jini is currently over in Sri Lanka with her mum and Andrew. It looks like it takes a little getting used to the change of food, I think it's best I just quote a bit from her email:

You know he spewed up a worm???? Grosssss.

llama Anyways, I think I'm over the toughest few weeks of the semester now. Oh yeah, there are the exams coming up but at least I can take a breather.

My sister has been doing some scanning from our South America trip (last year). I decided to put one up here now to add a bit of colour to the diary smiley - in case you're wondering it's a Llama.

These last minute assignments are killing me. I'm just about to go to bed but it's already 4:00am and I can only look forward to about 3 hours sleep! I still have Question 2 (out of 2) to complete for Linear Systems 201 and they take me *ages*. Not only that, I also have a presentation for Database Systems 252 tomorrow afternoon - I'm not really worried about this one though because I've already orgainsed what I'm going to be talking about.

In other news, I've been collecting bits and pieces (electronic) from the Field of Dreams 4 (fod4) rave I attended back in 1996. I plan to put up a little page to keep my memories. Stay tuned!

A picture of roger has been added to the links page. It's a little ripper smiley.

Seminar: Total e-Clipse

I attended a seminar with Ruwani tonight put on by the Curtin Business School. It was called "Total e-Clipse: The Five forces Driving the Internet and How They Will Change Your World Forever" by Professor Leyland Pitt. Below is a quote from the advertisement:

The way we live is being transformed by the Internet. To find out what forces are driving the rapid growth of the Internet and how they will effect your future, don't miss this opportunity with one of the world's foremost Internet experts, Professor Leyland Pitt. Professor Pitt has lectured at many of the world's most prestigious universities, including Harvard, and he is currently a visiting professor at Curtin Business School. Families, business, school and community groups are encouraged to RSVP by May 18 to Sarah on 9266 3899. Refreshments will be served after the lecture.

I found the lecture very interesting, Professor Leyland Pitt was an excellent and entertaining speaker. Silly me, I didn't take anything to write down notes but I'm sure I can remember everything he said (right!). I will have to rely on my trusty brain when writing a summary later. In the meantime why not view some of his work, simply cut'n'paste his name down into that "google search" window and you'll find many references for this guy...

On a separate note. I found some diary entries to back fill the first half of 1999 which I had been missing. I now have 2 solid years worth and the year 2000 page is coming along nicely! One of the 1999 entries reminded me of all the notes I took down while in Peru/South America. I've gotta get some pictures and text together!

There is a bit of a gap between this and the last entry, but all can be explained. I've had many assignments all due during this week including a group presentation. No, it's not all over just yet and next week will mirror this week. Just thought I'd stop by a quick diary entry though!

Please welcome another advert to the web site: Linux Life (http://www.linuxlife.org/). This is a great site with many links to all sorts of Linux related sites - excellent if you lead a Linux life!

[later] I was thinking about my diary and how I'd like to "back fill" more of the major things I remember. Lucky for me some of that difficulty was lifted when I remembered about my old .plan back at Zeta Internet. I took a look and it provides solid coverage for 1998! Ten minutes later (and one more Perl script) I now have the entries dumped into the database. At the same time I made a few small changes to the diary section (to accommodate 1998 and other years for that matter).

Take That Bill

Bill Gates with pie
on face I came across a good picture of Bill Gates when he was hit by that cream pie in the face. I decided that, although not an advert for free software, it is still worthy to take a spot in the advert section smiley

The weather in Perth has been really bad with heavy rain over the last week and a bit. Yesterday it was just pouring down while I was at Uni and I got drenched!. Curtin must have decided against any covered walk ways and because each building is so spread out there was no way out of the rain. To make matters worse, not only was I getting wet from above but my feet were soaked too - again Curtin must have thought drains unnecessary because the walkways were like mini rivers! I might get myself an umbrella in the future smiley.

It's nearing the end of semester with only another 3 weeks to go. As a result my time is being eaten up by all those assignments I had decided could wait until now (ie: all of them). I'm getting through them slowly though, so don't worry...

Here's an interesting story (maybe). When I upgraded the processor in my computer I also bought another cheap Socket 7 motherboard for my other case (to upgrade from a 486 -> P233). I put everything together and was going through the good old RedHat linux installation (via FTP from local network machine) but there was something wrong - the network connection was extremely slow. I couldn't understand because another computer on the same network was able to download at full Ethernet speed. I decided I'd just let it install slowly because I wanted to get to bed. In the morning I started to debug the situation. It wasn't physical line problems because I could flood ping (from/to) without packet loss, it wasn't the server (already debugged). I was getting transfer rates of about 30kbytes/second (roughly 1/40th Ethernet speed). It turns out the problem was with the NIC settings. It was set to auto (decide) whether to use the RJ45 connector or the BNC connector (I was using coax - so BNC). I switched the setting to specify the BNC connector and bang, up to full Ethernet speed. Piece of crap NIC - what can I expect for a cheapy NE2000!

Almost a week since the last entry - I've been putting it off! First of all I should say Happy Birthday Chantal (my sister) and an even more important Happy 21st Roger for the end of April.

The roads in Perth, WA have just gotten a little more dangerous as Ruwani has started regularly driving on her own. I'm just glad that when she's driving - I'm not on the road (cause she's got the car) smiley. Back to the trusty old buses for me!

I've upgraded my processor from a Pentium MMX 233Mhz (o/c to 250Mhz) up to an AMD K6-2 550Mhz (u/c to 500Mhz). You may be wondering why I'm so cool to underclock my processor?? Well it's because the blasted thing runs a little too hot until I get myself a decent cooling solution. In fact the CPU doesn't even run at 500Mhz when using the rated core voltage of 2.3V. I've currently had the box running a couple days at a reduced core voltage of 2.1V which seems to keep the temperature down. Regardless of that, 500Mhz is a decent speed increase and I'm now happy with Acrobat reader performance for large documents (which I find myself reading all too often).

Early this morning (or late last night) I decide to write up an entry in the current linux.com poll: Where Do You Use Linux?. I'll probably put a copy (with link from here) in the future when the actual post appears on linux.com. (update) It looks like that poll closed and I was the last post to have been added, which means it's up the top of the page (isn't that nice).

Ruwani is going for her driving exam (again) this morning. I hope she passes! (update) She passed - well done Ruwani!

It's been a busy week for me. I have been continuing my research and started a project for Mind Socket to handle the accounting side of things. I know there are many already made packages to do this sort of thing, but for Mind Socket the requirements are very basic and I want the flexibility of using my own code. It's also a good experience and has already lead to an easy way to make real-time SB web sites (all you need is a few modules and a couple lines of code!).

Back to Uni now and to make things worse I have many large assignments all due in the next 3/4 weeks. Time to get cracking!

With my holidays finishing up (but still don't have to get back to Uni until next week) I'm spending more time researching XML. It looks like there has recently been quite a bit of progress happening with mod_perl and XML stylesheets. I've still got a lot of reading todo but I seem to be favouring XML more and more!

I went fishing with Ruwani and her father the other morning. Ruwani was on the ball and managed to catch an already dead fish - well done smiley. Later on the day she managed to catch up with some more good luck at Kings Park when a crow crapped on her and then shortly after she was hit with a football!

The other day I replaced the site search with a google search box. The reason is that the site search idea has gone down the list of priorities smiley.

Yesterday and this morning I spent in the Swan Valley with Ruwani. It was great and I got a chance to relax (and think about Site Builder). Tonight we're off on a cruise!

Although I've been using UNIX console based mail readers for a long time, at home I've been using Netscape (4+ series). It sucks to high heaven and I had been putting off changing because I'm lazy. Well, the other day I decided to take the plunge and I'm happily using mutt now! To celebrate, I've also added a mutt button on the list of ads displayed on the site - yay!

I made a mistake and only had 3 exams last week. I still have one left for tomorrow night! I fear I may not have done so great with the DAA exam and a similar situation for POS. Although I knew the POS stuff inside-out I stuffed up with time management and ran out of time because I spent too much time on one question (silly me).

Still (slowly) making progress with the Site Builder redesign. I took a moment to start looking into XML and it's possible uses. I wrote up a info page detailing my findings: XML Info (update: link no longer available).

I have decided to release the old site builder (I was almost there anyways). Some of the people involved in the redesign have never actually used site builder and using the old incarnation may help their understanding. The tar ball is now available from the Site Builder page.

Ruwani and I purchased some bicycles over the weekend to start off some exercise trends. We have now been riding every morning and hopefully we'll continue this!

I've gotten off my behind and decided to redesign site builder from scratch. I'm getting together interested people so I can actually build this thing right! I have uploaded some preliminary information to the Linux section if anyone else is interested.

I'm thinking about adding an image gallery - however this may be a local thing cause I'd like to only include high quality images...

Only a short entry because I'm meant to be studying for the 4 mid-semester exams I have starting Monday! Oh, they shouldn't be too difficult - except for DAA (Design and Analysis of Algorithms).

Phew, today we've had a "working bee" and cleared up the outside courtyard. This was getting overgrown with weeds through the paving and covered with mounds of dried leaves. We were also going to plant some herbs and stuff but I'm not counting on any success smiley.

Yesterday was my last day at iiNet. Yup, I've decided to finish up so I can concentrate on just two things for once: University, and Mind Socket.

I'm falling a bit behind on my diary entries because I've been working my weekends away at iiNet! Anyways, I am now getting more use out of the code I put together for Uni group projects. Database Systems has just started up a group project and with the addition of a few lines here and a few bits of HTML there, I now have a new area up and running!

Congratulations go out to my sister who is pregnant with her first baby. I will be flying back to Sydney for this one!

My desk has been put together but I don't have a photo yet. Just wait though, it is really awesome smiley.

Ibiza '99 - The Year of Trance Silly me - I bought another CD. It's called "Ibiza '99 - The Year of Trance" (see scan). The music is great but that's the last CD for a while because things are getting expensive!

On Saturday I picked up my desk, yes it had finally arrived at Ikea (after some 1.5 months). I'm at home putting everything together when I realise the side desk top is missing some essential screw holes for the rails (which hold the legs). What crap. Now I have to take the desk top back and get it exchanged at Ikea! When I get back and put everything together I'll take a picture and post here.

A bit of a quite birthday this year - I'm sad that I didn't get to see my family ;( Oh well... Anyways, I've been busy as usual and have now finished that Uni stuff: file uploads/listings and log postings (add/edit/delete). At the moment I'm only making use of this stuff with POS101 cause it's the only subject that I have to do any group work. Hopefully my code will come in handy for other subjects in the future!

Sasha - Ibiza I don't often buy CDs so I though I should mention that I recently did just that! Here is a little background into my purchase: There has been a lot of CDs coming out relating to "Ibiza" (Balearic Islands - Spain) and because most of it is electronic music (which I like) I thought I'd better take a listen. So I fired up my Linux napster client and tried to find some samples. I decided I liked and went out and bought the Sasha 013 Ibiza (Global Underground) double CD. It's pretty good!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ME!

Phew, a hectic night tonight (actually it's now morning on the 9th) with a few problems popping up on the web hosting server I've been working on as well as updates to the University section. I have uploaded the unit pages, however the more sensitive information is now password protected.

With the University stuff I'm in the process of putting together some functionality to allow log messages and file uploads which is primarily to help any group work I may be involved in. The file upload support is complete (thanks also to Roger here), but I gotta sleep so I'll do the log stuff later - it should be easy though.

It's my Birthday on Thursday 9th of March! Unfortunately, being over in Perth, I won't get to celebrate with the usual crowd (friends and family).

I've been quite busy over the week getting back into university. I haven't been at Uni full time for a couple years now! It certainly gives me a different perspective on things.

I also spent quite a bit of time working on the Circes web site (Mind Socket client). I have a big project related to this site which should be very interesting for me.

On the 30th (last Thursday) I visited the dentist because my tooth was giving me so much pain. It turns out that a huge old filling from when I was much younger had finally killed the tooth. An infection (called an abscess) had started at the tooth root. Although I'm a relative youngster I had to get a root canal! Expensive stuff - so the moral of this story is to look after your teeth.

Recently I've been doing some consulting work setting up a web hosting server. (What a surprise, have you seen my article regarding this very topic!). I was running into problems with Perl and Apache+mod_perl. In the end it turned out that the glibc libraries hadn't installed correctly (perhaps disk write error) when the box was setup. I can't believe this was the case - talk about something you just assume to be working!

I've now completed my first week of Uni - only lectures though, no tutorials or labs yet. I also updated the Uni section although I will not be making the subject areas available over the Internet just yet.

Scanner

My scanner arrived today (wow, that was quick) so first thing was first and I scanned in my stress banana. Checkout the year 1999 diary entries to see the scan.

It looks like (if everything works out) that I may become the first B.E. Software Engineering graduate at Curtin smiley. Now that would be something. Anyways, I have started up a new University section where I'll keep all my docs and anything else useful to me.

I've ordered a scanner so I'll soon be able to put some pictures on the site! If I was working full time then I may have gone for a high-end HP but instead I chose the UMAX (Astra) 1220S (scsi).

Today I finally got my Uni enrollment sorted out - but I still don't know what my timetable is going to be like (I'll leave that until tomorrow).

I have added quite a large chunk onto my "Managing Web Hosting Servers" article. I would like to get the article close to completion soon but need to spend a whole lot more time on it. The main thing was my list of things todo for implementation.

Last night I went out with Ruwani and her family to one of their family friends for dinner. It was actually a pretty big night celebrating the Chinese new year (a little late). They even had the traditional Dragon and Lion dancers which was just incredible!

Oh year, Ruwani and I now have a car (yeah!). Although I'll still be a bus man for most of the time this should make things a little more convenient.

Well, I'm all enrolled at Uni now (except the wrong subjects). I now have to go through all the subjects in my course and compare them to the subjects I have completed at UTS and determine which I should have exempt (or part exempt).

I have to enroll at Uni on Friday. Meanwhile I've been busy doing customer updates and training with iiNet. I hope to continue (and complete) many customer updates over the next couple days while also taking time to work on my first article about managing web hosting servers.

I'd also like to get started on the new Mind Socket project area so that Roger and myself can do some interesting project work!

It's really late now and I have to get to sleep because I'm starting my new job at iiNet (Western Australia's Internet Provider) tomorrow!

Last night I went out to dinner with Ruwani and her family. Because of the Chinese New Year we had booked ahead to make sure of seating. Everything went along just fine until after our meal when it was time for payment. Ruwani's Mum was telling the restaurant staff she will be recommending restaurant "x" to her friends in the future. That's when we found out we weren't in restaurant "x" - ie: we were in the wrong restaurant. Somehow there was a booking in the same name and no was the wiser smiley.

I've been in Perth three days now and I need my Internet access! Our apartment is really nice and quite large for just the two of us. We're located in South Perth just 10mins away from the City and 20mins away from my Uni. Buses to both locations are close by so I'm happy.

Because I'm on the lookout for a job at iiNet I have decided to create my Resume (just a placeholder before). Take a look if you're interested, however it's pretty brief.

Read the site news cause I've now got the articles section working.

Today is my last day in Sydney - I'm flying out tonight at 19:10. Lucky me, using some frequent flyer points I have upgraded to business class. I'm looking forward to the flight for once smiley. This will be my last entry from Sydney for a while - see you everyone!

I was over at Rogers place yesterday and we were putting together ideas for our next big project - a tasking system. Zeta Internet have been using a task system (of sorts) for at least a year and it has proved to be extremely useful. I'd like to take that functionality, improve on it, and make use of SB to handle rendering (ie: you can make it all pretty easily).

While over at Rogers his brother Adam showed me a program he'd created for matching clothes. He sets up database tables of "tops" and "bottoms" with pictures obtained from various sources (or drawn). There is an interface where someone (currently his girlfriend) can setup "matches". In typical usage you select "tops" and "bottoms" and you get "matches" or "mis-matches". Now he's always in style! smiley

The other day I had been working on the initial version of SB_DB. This is similar to SB_CGI but loads data objects from an SQL database (currently mySQL). Since I've been busy at work I haven't had much of chance to play with what I'd done until today! I now have this diary section stored in mySQL and the pages (real-time script) using SB_DB to generate the diary dynamic section. SB_DB allows me to do much more nifty stuff over SB_CGI. As a result (and initial test) I now have separated my diary into post and pre 2000.

I've been rather busy the last couple days because of two things. One is that Ruwani left for Perth (gone now) and we had to completely clean up the apartment (well, Ruwani did most - thanks!). Two was that over night on the 19th I was working to move all the Zeta servers down to ZipWorld (Pacific Internet).

The Zeta to ZipWorld move started at just after midnight and I didn't get home until 7:00am! The move required 5 trips and much waiting in between as we made sure service came back up. Things were mostly smooth with some routing errors and other slight errors with the configuration on other servers (some hadn't been turned off for ages!).

Tonight we are going out with my friends for a variety of reasons: my leaving to Perth, David's birthday, and Greg's birthday... I had a bit of a big night last night at dinner with my Boss so I might take it easy.

My flight has been rescheduled to Tuesday 1st of February at 19:20. Things are pretty tight at Zeta Internet because of the integration with Pacific Internet. Nick asked me to stay on until the end of the month. Ruwani will still be leaving on the 20th though.

After finally upgrading all web services at Zeta to Apache 1.3.9 I have been able to put my real-time site online. This happened on Wednesday I think? Anyways the main thing is that it's there now and I'll be improving things as time goes on. One of my ideas it to add a dynamic (miscellaneous) "Articles" section. The idea is that sometimes I may do something which I want to write about (too long for this diary) and so I can place it in there...

We went to the Hotel Nikko tonight for dinner because it has an excellent buffet. Everything was going fine up until we were being seated and Ruwani fell off her chair in a majorly unco move.

We've been packing a little today and yesterday. Even though it was only a little, we have already filled 3 packing boxes!

Yesterday I re-wrote the Site Builder loading engine which had the following results: slightly faster, more tolerant, new global variable which allows/disallows replacement of tags.
