Linux

tux

I've been running Linux on my computer systems since 1997 shortly after starting work with Zeta Internet. Zeta used Linux exclusively and provided a great environment to rapidly increase my skills. Perhaps this had something to do with Nick Andrew - thanks Nick!

Zeta was using Red Hat Linux and so that's what I installed and continued to use up until 2003 when I made the move to Debian. Once Ubuntu came onto the scene I switched over and have found it a great distribution without any fuss and kept up-to-date with the regular release cycle.

Current Systems

  • Apple Mac Mini (late 2009 model) with 6GB of RAM and external FW800 500GB disk running Ubuntu Lucid.
  • ASUS M2NPV-VM with AMD x2 4800+ (65W), 8GB of RAM, and onboard video (GeForce 6150). Running Ubuntu Lucid but it's currently unused. I was thinking to upgrade to Phenom II X4 to get some new life out of it, otherwise it seems to be a bit of a waste!

Old Systems

  • Thinkpad X200 - work laptop with Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) and was performing very nicely!
  • Thinkpad T60 - work laptop running Ubuntu Feisty very well.
  • IBM Thinkpad T40 (237396U) - work laptop, nice but replaced with T60
  • generic 1.4Ghz AMD desktop with KT400 based motherboard. Sold on return to Australia, was a good system over the years.
  • IBM Thinkpad 560X - worked well until I sold it in 2004
  • Palm Tungsten T2 - not running Linux, but I used it with Linux. Unfortunately it's too much of a hassle to muck about with though so it's sitting in a drawer somewhere.

Code

Since the beginning of 1999 my friend Roger Barnes and I began the Mind Socket business. Part of the business is web design/creation services. This business together with my curiosity of programming has led to the creation of a few useful bits of code.

My coding experience started back in 1995 (just like Linux I started late, damnit!) when I attended programming classes at high school. We learned basic programming skills using Pascal (Borland turbo style) very slowly over the school year. Towards the end of Year 12 I was getting heavily into BBS's and together with my friend John Allinson we started up SPRUnG where we coded BBS doors (mostly games).
